Tutorial -- Dotted Outlines
Learn how to make icons like this:

Using Photoshop CS2. I don't know if it's translateable, sorry.

Going from this to this since it's the easiest :)

First, colour your image whichever way you want to. I used this tutorial by [info]i_have_no_mind

Now you need to make a circular selection from your picture. Change from the square marquee tool to the eliptical marquee tool if need be by back clicking on the square marquee tool in the side toolbar.

Now make a circular selection on your image. You can make a perfect circle by holding down shift as you make your selection. Then copy the selection and paste it onto a new transparent document.

Create a new layer and fill it with the background colour (or whatever because it can be changed later). Put the layer behind the circle layer so that you can see the circle image.

Increase the canvas size so that there is room to work around the image. It is best to make it larger than you think you'll need it so that you can work around the image without running out of room.

Now the tricky part :)
Click the shape tool. Now click the elliptical shape tool, AND the sqare with the pen in it.
1) 2)

Now create a circular outine. It's very tricky to get it perfectly around the image, so just make it as close as possible. You can't move it just yet.

Now click on the text tool and move it over the line. When it looks like
this: NOT this: OR this:
click on the line, it should change to white and a cursor will blink where you clicked it.

Now when you type, it will follow the outline you created!

Choose a font with a good dash - it must be thick enough to be able to see when you resize the image, so Violation is not a good choice. I chose Cooper Black (it usually comes standard with your computer). Choose the colour of font you want. Now type a line of dashes along the line. You might have to put spaces between each dash like I did. You can change the colour and the font as much as you like as long as you don't rasterize the layer. You may have a large gap where my text meet up again (like I did), to correct this you just have to change the size of the font.
-->

Now you can move the line using the move tool :)

You can use whatever font you want to decorate it, and any text you want. Or you could just leave it as it is.

THAT'S IT!!!

To use other shapes you need to make a new layer above your image, and then use the shape tool on the normal setting. You then select the shape with the wand tool, and change the ative layer to the one with the image on it. Then you copy the image and follow the tutorial, using the same shape for the outline part. You will have to mess around with the dotted line because some shapes have certain "beginning" and "ending" points, indicated by a circle on the line. The text will stop there so when you click on it with the text tool you need to click on the circle so that it will write all the way around the line. You might also have to fill in the spaces where the dashes miss (especially around sharp points) .

*bows* I've always wondered how to do this. Thank God I have PS CS as a back-up or I'd be screwed.
[info]aprilisloca on August 18th, 2006 06:17 pm (UTC)
This is an excellent tutorial! Simple, and the final product looks so good! It's really too bad though, I don't have CS. I can follow up the the text/dash part. Maybe I'll play around in PS7 and see if I can find a similar too.

Thanks again for this great tutorial!

[info]heymadeline on August 18th, 2006 06:51 pm (UTC)
love it.
i use psp, so if you want to add this to show psp users how to do it, here it is.

1. Click the preset shape tool, set it to the shape and put it around the picture. Keep it as a vector.
2. Set the text tool to 'Floating'
3. Put the cursor with the 'A' on the edge of the shape. The 'A' should become diagonal, with something that smile ) underneath it.
4. Add the dashes.
5. Delete the vector shape.

:D
thanks again.

I am having trouble with other shapes?
[info]miss_msichana on September 3rd, 2006 05:19 pm (UTC)
You have to make sure that you click the outline in the right place ... because the other shapes have corners, there is a certain place where it starts and stops. If you don't click on that place (usually one of the corners) the outline won't go all the way around the shape. You can see the corner if you click on the outline in a place and see where it ends.

Sometimes, you have to play around with the spacing of the dots/dashes. Also, there might be places where they won't go. And you'll just have to go back afterwards and fill in the spaces with extra dots. You can do this by making another text box and typing one dash. Then rasterizing the layer and copy and pasting it into the correct position, rotating it as necessary.

Hope that helps.

[info]bird_of_blue on December 1st, 2006 05:48 pm (UTC)
Hi! This tutorial is absolutely awesome! I just can't do it though. But I can cut out the picture of Kelly Clarkson and put my own in it.. so my question is if you could post an exact picture like this one, but with the other shapes?? That would be lovely! Thank you :)
[info]barstr7 on December 28th, 2006 11:12 pm (UTC)
I think I'm following the first bit correctly (probably not though) but every time I try to move the text tool over the line made by the shape tool the cursor will not change so the text will follow the shape. Does it matter that I only have PS 7 or am I screwing something up?
[info]miss_msichana on December 29th, 2006 01:13 am (UTC)
I don't know exactly what would be different with PS7 to PSCS2... maybe just try getting it as close to the line as you can and then clicking. It might take a few times, but I'm sure you can still do it :) Hope that helps!
[info]angel_63 on January 10th, 2007 10:57 pm (UTC)
Thats so baeutyfull!

Can you say me how i make this one with ther star *pleaseee*
[info]miss_msichana on January 10th, 2007 11:00 pm (UTC)
It's exactly the same except you use the star shape instead of the circle. But when you click on the outline to make the dashes, you have to make sure you click on one of the points, because shapes with corners have a certain start/end point. If you don't get it right the first time you can always undo your action and click on the correct place the next time.
[info]angel_63 on January 11th, 2007 12:01 am (UTC)
I think i have no star shape :(

And how you get the black part with the star?
[info]miss_msichana on January 12th, 2007 10:13 pm (UTC)
You have a layer of all black, and then you use the shape tool to make the star shape and then you just delete the part inside the star. But if you don't have a star shape... then you can't really do that.

I made this star thing. It's transparent in the middle so you can just paste it ontop of any image you want.

thank you for help - it works! thanks!!!

If you don't mind me asking, what font did you use in the last step? To write the words 'Kelly Clarkson'?
Thanks! GREAT TUTORIAL. I loved it! (:
[info]miss_msichana on October 13th, 2007 11:16 pm (UTC)
It's Cooper Black, it came with my computer... but I'm sure you could download it from somewhere if you don't already have it.

I'm going crazy lol

I dont understand how to make my text like a circle
I read I've to set my text to Floating but how can i do it?
[info]miss_msichana on August 11th, 2008 02:00 pm (UTC)
I don't know what you mean by "floating." You need to use the oval tool set on pen first before you try to do the text.
